Most fleet managers we talk to have used AirTag-style tracking for personal stuff — keys, a wallet, a kid's backpack. The leap to fleet use feels mysterious because the marketing makes it sound like magic. It's not. It's four ordinary pieces of technology stacked on top of each other in a clever way. Let's walk through them.
The four pieces
An AirTag-style fleet tracking system has four moving parts:
- The tag itself — a coin-cell-powered chip that broadcasts a Bluetooth signal every few seconds.
- The Find My network — hundreds of millions of iPhones and iPads constantly listening for those Bluetooth signals in the background.
- Apple's location infrastructure — encrypted relay that turns "an iPhone heard tag X at 2:14pm at this GPS coordinate" into a location update.
- The fleet platform — software like AlwaysTracked that pulls those updates, layers on geofences, alerts, multi-user access, and the operations workflow you actually need.
Take any one of those out and the system stops working. Together, they let a $25 piece of plastic with a one-cell battery run for a year and report its location across most of North America without a SIM card.
What happens when a tag broadcasts
Every two seconds or so, a tag wakes up and broadcasts a Bluetooth Low Energy advertisement. That advertisement contains a rolling cryptographic identifier that changes constantly — Apple designed this so a tag can't be tracked by anyone except the owner.
Any iPhone within Bluetooth range (about 30 to 50 feet outdoors) hears the advertisement. That phone notes its own GPS location and sends an encrypted record up to Apple: "I heard identifier ABC at coordinates X,Y at time T." The phone does this in the background, consuming negligible battery, and the user has no idea it happened.
Apple holds that record. Only the owner of the matching tag (or the platform managing it) can decrypt it and turn it into a usable location. That's why Find My is end-to-end encrypted — even Apple can't see where your tags are.
Why no cell service
This is the part that breaks everyone's brain. The tag itself never connects to the cell network. Ever. The cellular connection is provided by every iPhone that passes by. The tag is the speaker, the iPhones are the microphones, the Find My network is the wire that carries the signal back.
That's why a tag battery lasts a year — Bluetooth advertising is incredibly low-power compared to cellular. It's also why coverage depends on iPhone density. In a city, your tag is being heard every few seconds by dozens of phones. In an empty parking lot at 3am, nobody's listening, so updates pause until morning.
What affects accuracy
Location accuracy is a function of three things:
- How recently a phone passed by. A location reported one minute ago is more accurate than one reported six hours ago.
- How many phones reported it. Several phones triangulating gives you a tighter location than one phone driving past.
- The phone's own GPS quality. A phone in an open area gives a better location than one inside a building.
In a normal city or suburb, expect accuracy within 10 to 30 feet. On a highway, similar. In an empty rural area, you might get a location that's accurate to a quarter mile — because the only phone that heard your tag was driving past at 70mph.
Where it works and where it doesn't
Tags work anywhere there are iPhones. That's most of populated North America, almost all of Europe, and most of the developed world. Specifically:
- Cities and suburbs — excellent. Updates every few minutes.
- Highways and gas stations — very good. Cars carry phones.
- Rural towns — good, especially anywhere people live or shop.
- Industrial yards and warehouses — good if anyone with a phone walks through during the day.
- Active job sites — excellent. Workers carry phones.
- Inside metal containers or shielded buildings — degraded. Bluetooth doesn't punch through metal well.
- Deep backcountry, oilfield, remote ag — limited. Use GPS instead.

What it doesn't do
Worth being honest about the limits:
- Not real-time second-by-second tracking. Updates are usually every few minutes in dense areas, longer in sparse ones. Fine for fleet ops, not fine for following a moving truck second-by-second.
- Not a panic button. Tags can't trigger alerts on their own — they need something to happen on the platform side.
- Not for the deep wilderness. No phones, no updates. GPS still wins out there.
- Not anti-tamper. Tags can be removed if someone knows where they are. Mount them somewhere unobvious.
The bottom line
AirTag fleet tracking works because Apple built a free, encrypted, global location network on the back of every iPhone, and because tag batteries last a year on a single coin cell. Stack a real fleet platform on top and you get the operational tools to actually run a business with it.
