    They look like the same product on a sales call. They're not. Here's what each one actually does, what it costs over three years, and where each one wins.

    I get the question every week. "Why not just buy GPS trackers?" Fair question — they've been around forever, every fleet manager has used one, and you can order them on Amazon today. So why are most operators we talk to either ripping them out or never installed them in the first place? It comes down to four things: total cost, battery, install, and what you're actually trying to do.

    The three-year cost reality

    Forget the unit price on the box. The number that matters is what 100 assets cost you to track for three years. Tags ship with a coin-cell battery good for about a year and the cellular signal piggybacks on the smartphones around them, so there's no SIM card and no carrier contract. GPS trackers carry a per-device monthly fee for cellular service, plus the hardware itself, plus the install labor.

    On a 100-asset fleet, the difference is anywhere from $15k to $80k over three years. On a 500-asset fleet, the gap turns into a real number: enough to hire a person, buy a truck, or just leave on the bottom line.

    Battery and install — the part nobody talks about

    Sales decks for GPS trackers always show the dashboard. They never show the install. The reality on the yard floor is that GPS trackers either need to be hardwired to your truck's 12V system (hour of labor per vehicle, plus a fuse you'll forget about) or they need to be recharged weekly. A coin-cell tag goes on with double-sided tape or a mounting puck and runs for a year before you swap a battery you can buy at the gas station for a dollar.

    That difference matters most when you're tagging things that aren't trucks — trailers without batteries, generators that sit for weeks, hand tools, dumpsters, carts. That's most of what an operator actually loses.

    Tags rely on the smartphones nearby acting as relays. In any populated area — which is where 95% of fleet operators run — that's plenty. In genuine middle-of-nowhere terrain (logging crews, oilfield, remote ag), GPS still wins. We're upfront about this on every demo. If your fleet runs in places where you don't see another truck for an hour, we're not the right tool.

    • Equipment you need to track from inside a sealed metal container
    • Government/regulated fleets that mandate cellular telemetry

    When to choose which

    Pick GPS trackers if:

    • You run long-haul trucks across genuine remote stretches
    • You need second-by-second live location while a vehicle is moving
    • You're under a regulator or insurance contract that requires cellular telemetry
    • Your assets sit inside sealed metal containers most of the day

    Pick tag-based tracking if:

    • You run any kind of rental fleet
    • You're a construction yard tracking generators, compressors, and hand tools
    • You manage a landscaping or service operation with trailers and trailers full of small gear
    • You run a vacation rental operation with carts, bikes, or beach gear scattered across an island
    • You've quoted GPS trackers, done the math, and walked away from the price

    The honest summary

    GPS trackers are a great tool for a specific job: live cellular telemetry on moving vehicles. For everything else an operator actually loses — trailers, generators, carts, tools, gear that sits between jobs — tags are the better tool. Cheaper, easier to install, battery you can forget about, and a dashboard built for fleet ops instead of a 2009-era web portal.
